In this paper I return to the science fiction genre. I choose Isaac Asimov to talk about the rules of ethics and I will do this through the “Three Laws of Robotics”. Asimov ‘s laws initially entailed three guidelines for machines:
- Law One – “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.”
- Law Two – “A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.”
- Law Three – “A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.”
- Asimov later added the “Zeroth Law,” above all the others – “A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.”
We are talking about fiction but it is true that Isaac’s tales always revolved around how robots might follow logical ethical codes which are imposed by humans. So there is a certain meaning of “human”.
